Every year, same question — "Is it a holy day of obligation?" Besides the annual reply in the affirmative, I like to inform members of this community that it is also the Patronal Feast Day of the United States, and, as such, we should want to worship together whether an “obligation” or not.
As we struggle to uphold peace, justice, compassion, and basic civility in this divided nation, may we invoke the name of our blessed mother, under this moniker in particular, to heal our wounds and bring us together. May we be reminded that she brought to birth our salvation through, not only her obedience to God, but also her love for humanity, and may she serve as a model for our own faith, and love for one another.
Hail Mary, full of grace,
the Lord is with thee;
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.
