Red Mass celebrated in Memphis

Photographer:

On October 1, 2017, the Most Reverend Martin D. Holley, D.D., bishop of Memphis celebrated the Red Mass for members of the St. Thomas More Catholic Lawyers Guild of West Tennessee, as well as other local judges, attorneys, law school professors, students and government officials. The Mass has been offered in the Memphis Diocese for several years, and this year saw the largest attendance to date. The Mass signifies the need for members of the legal profession to seek the wisdom of the Holy Spirit to make fair and effective legal defense of the innocent and to mete out justice. In his homily, Bishop Holley emphasized the responsibility of Christian legal professionals to protect the rights of people, emphasizing non-violence, and to show mercy and compassion as they go about their legal and judicial duties. Bishop Holley himself sees justice tightly aligned to mercy as reflected in his episcopal motto “His Mercy Endures Forever.
