MINISTRY TO PEOPLE AFFECTED WITH
MENTAL ILLNESS AND THEIR FAMILIES
Mission: As people of the Catholic Diocese of Memphis, we
are dedicated to living our Baptismal commitment: by embracing
all who suffer from mental illness, by encouraging other to
follow the teachings of the Catholic Church and the examples
given by our Savior Jesus Christ, and by offering support and
acceptance to all persons affected by mental illness, including
their families.
Mental Illness Awareness Week
Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW) is October 4-10, designated
by Congress to promote public education about serious mental
illnesses such as major depression, bipolar disorder and
schizophrenia. Others included post-traumatic stress disorder,
anxiety disorders including obsessive-compulsive disorder and
borderline personality disorder. About 60 million Americans
experience mental health problems in any given year. One in 17
lives with the most serious conditions.
The NCPD on Mental Illness, an outreach program
of the National Catholic Partnership on Disability (NCPD),
is encouraging Catholic observance of the annual Mental Illness
Awareness Week and the National Day of Prayer for Mental Illness
Recovery and Understanding during this time. This national
effort is designed to promote pastoral sensitivity to, and
inclusion of, individuals and their family members who are
affected by mental illness. It is an opportunity for dioceses
and parishes to raise awareness about this important issue, to
educate Catholics about mental illness, and to help reduce the
unfortunate stigma often associated with mental illness.
Diocesan Committee on Ministry to the Mentally Ill and their
families was established in 2007 to assist our parishes in this
important ministry of compassion and justice by providing
resources, awareness education and support. Joining nationwide
observance the committee is sponsoring the following programs
and events:
“Mental Illness and the Workplace: Lifting the Stigma”
“Responding Compassionately to Mental Illness; In our Own
Voice” (PDF
Flyer)

MID-SOUTH AREA ASSOCIATION OF CATHOLIC NURSES (MSAACN)
The
Mid South Area Association of Catholic Nurses (MSAACN) was
established in 2002. The mission is to give nurses of different
backgrounds, but with the same Roman Catholic values, the
opportunity to promote moral principles within the Catholic
Church context in nursing and stimulate desire for
professionals’ improvement. This approach to Roman Catholic
doctrine focuses on educational programs, spiritual nourishment,
patient advocacy and integration of faith and health.
As
we continue to share our faith and values with each other, we
simultaneously reach outward to the larger church and also our
community, as we offer support to those in need.
Membership is open to all Catholic registered, licensed and
retired nurses, nursing students residing in west Tennessee,
east Arkansas and north Mississippi.

MSAACN Prayer
Lord, you have called each one of us to the ministry of healing.
Open our hearts to your abundant grace, so that we may imitate
Jesus as He washed the feet of His disciples. May we always
treat each patient with the care and compassion He
offers us. Amen
