Liturgical Foundations (20 hrs)

Location: St. Mary Church, downtown Memphis

Materials: Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy

A study of the history of the liturgical life of the Church and  introduction to the basic resources, tools and method of liturgical studies. A wonderful way to learn more about the Mass and why we pray  together the way we do.

Sacristan Training - Level I    (6 hrs)

Instructors: Kathleen Hicks and Steve Peterson

Location: Cathedral of Immaculate Conception,

Conference Room and Sanctuary

Dates & Times: Saturday, May 12;  9:00 a.m. - 4:15 p.m.

Materials: The Sacristy Manual; $18

Registration Deadline: May 1

This course examines the spirituality of working behind the scenes as a parish sacristan.  Includes instruction on the preparation of vessels, vestments and liturgical books for the celebration of the Sunday liturgy.

Prerequisite: Sacristan level I & II

Building on Level II, this course is designed for those who wish to serve as sacristan for diocesan celebrations,    including the Rite of Election, Chrism Mass, Ordinations, Confirmations, and other diocesan liturgies.

 

Christian Spirituality (8 hrs)

Location: Queen of Peace Retreat Center, Dancyville

This course will explore the history and foundations of Christian spirituality with an emphasis on the role of prayer, discernment, and reading the signs of the times in developing a spirituality for the 21st century.

This course offers an introduction to the ministry of Lector, including discernment of the call to this ministry and skills necessary for effective ministry within the liturgical assembly.

The Nuts and Bolts of Daily Spirituality (10 hrs)

This course will identify the stages of commitment we need to focus on in order to live our baptismal commitment in a whole, progressive and exciting way.  It is designed to empower those who would like to live intentional spiritual lives themselves, and help others to do so.

Spanish for Pastoral Ministry  Level II (30 hrs)

Building on level I this course is for persons with some knowledge of Spanish and will focus on gaining a deeper understanding of Latino culture to facilitate involvement in ministries to Spanish speakers.

This course offers an introduction to the origin and role of the extraordinary minister of Holy Communion.  In addition to a basic theology of the Eucharist as sacrifice and covenant meal, the practicalities of administering Holy Communion are examined.  Completion of this course entails certification by the diocese as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion.

Pastor’s Permission Required.

The course fees are as follows unless previously stated: there is No Charge for Liturgical Foundations or any Level I courses.

All other courses are $4 per class hour for single registrant (e.g. $4 per hour x 6 hours = $24).

$3 per class hour for each registrant when two or more register for the same class from the same parish.

Required texts may be ordered through the Institute, if noted on the registration form.

If you are a member of one of these parishes, your tuition is free of charge

Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Christ the King in Southaven, St. Augustine, St. Louis, Church of the Nativity, St. Brigid and Church of the Holy Spirit.

The Department of Catechesis of the Catholic Diocese of Memphis gives Catechist Certification credit for ILS courses in liturgy and spirituality.
