CURRICULUM The mission of Catholic schools requires that each school provide relevant, meaningful, and quality instruction, not only in the Catholic religion, but also in all academic subjects. A volunteer committee of principals was formed to establish curricular parameters for Religion and Early Childhood. Utilizing the research of professional educational organizations, the committee agreed on curricular guidelines. The curriculum is systemic, Gospel-based, standards-based, flexible, usable, and adaptable to the needs of individual schools. In 2008 the Catholic Diocese of Memphis partnered with the University of Notre Dame to focus on curriculum planning. Teachers from the diocese met to use a common template as they developed curriculum that focuses on what students will be able to do at the end of a course. Course outcomes, unit concepts, and goals were written for Science and Social Studies based on national standards. In 2011 the Catholic Diocese of Memphis rounded out its curriculum by adopting Common Core Standards for Mathematics and English/Language Arts. These standards were developed with educators, content experts, researchers, and national organizations. The standards are rigorousin content and in application of knowledge through high-order skills. By using all multiple resources, the Catholic Diocese of Memphis provides students with a content-rich education that will prepare them for college and life. INSTRUCTION |
