Funeral Mass planned for Sister Mary Good Shepherd Lancaster, R.G.S.
A Memorial Mass has been scheduled for Sister Mary Good Shepherd Lancaster, R.G.S., on Saturday, February 11 at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Ascension, located at 3680 Ramill Rd. Father Robert Marshall will preside.
Born Jane Lancaster in St. Inigoes, Maryland, on March 19, 1919, she entered the religious life with the Good Shepherd Sisters in 1941. She was indeed a "good shepherdess" who served faithfully and generously in many folds _ Peoria, Tulsa, St. Louis, Los Angeles, New Orleans, and many years in Memphis.
Serving often as superior, including in Memphis, Sister fulfilled every role from time to time. She drove a truck, nursed the sick, taught school and led the Legion of Mary. She was a group mother, a sacristan, a babysitter, a gardener, a catechist, and always kept an eye out for "lost sheep" in whatever city she happened to be serving. Many of Sister's friends in Memphis remember her for her "unstoppable" activities _ initiating a marvelous reading program for dyslexic students at DeNeuville School, working at Casa Maria and DeNeuville Learning Center, and serving as a "pied piper" to Spanish-speaking children at Ascension parish where she helped with First Communion classes and the children's Liturgy of the Word. Children flocked to her with love.
Diagnosed with leukemia, Sister Good Shepherd spent her last months helping the sisters and staff in the infirmary of Immaculate Heart Convent in St. Louis. She supported each by her gentle love, prayers and patient suffering. She continued to work in the garden, and always providing fresh roses for the chapel. Her final days were beautiful and graced with the loving prayers of her community, staff, friends and the visit of two of her nephews. When asked what she would do in heaven, Sister replied, "I will pray for the whole world." Sister Good Shepherd died peacefully on Thursday, February 2, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. In the gospel account of the Presentation, Simeon says: "At last all powerful master, you give leave to your servant to go in peace, for my eyes have seen your salvation." Sister undoubtedly echoed those words as our Blessed Mother presented her to Jesus, the Good Shepherd.

Louisville Auxilliary Bishop Charles Maloney dies at 93
Bishop Charles G. Maloney of Louisville, Kentucky, whose 51 years of service made him the senior Roman Catholic bishop in the United States, died April 30 at Sts. Mary and Elizabeth Hospital.
Maloney, who was 93, was the auxiliary bishop of Louisville from 1955 to 1988, when he officially retired but continued to work as auxiliary bishop emeritus. He served under three Louisville archbishops.
Maloney, a Louisville native, confirmed more than 80,000 people into the Catholic Church over the course of his ministry, which began with his ordination as priest in 1937.
"We have lost a great and gentle servant of the Catholic Church and this community," Archbishop Thomas C. Kelly said in a statement. "Bishop Maloney will be greatly missed by all of us."
Maloney was one of the last surviving American bishops who had attended the reformist Second Vatican Council as a bishop. He made an influential speech there promoting a Vatican document in favor of religious liberty.
Although Maloney officially retired in 1988, he continued to serve on advisory boards and, until recently, to assist Archbishop Kelly at confirmation services.
"O all the things that I treasure about him, it is his wisdom, which is a combination of charity and experience," Kelly said in the statement. "He is a man of profound faith. That gives him a vision of church that very few people have."
Bishop Maloney served under archbishops John A. Floersh (1955-1967), Thomas J. McDonough (1967-1981) and Kelly, from 1982 to the present. He was the first auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Louisville.
The funeral liturgy for Bishop Maloney was held May 4 at the Cathedral of the Assumption in Louisville. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, also in Louisville.
