St. Philip Church Serves Seder Supper
Many have heard the phrase, Actions speak louder than words, but the parish religious education families at St. Philip Church took this saying to heart on Sunday, March 16.
Following Mass, nearly 100 people gathered in Schaubroeck Hall for a traditional Seder meal. Authentic foods and prayers were used to re-create what Jesus did during the Last Supper.
"We feel it is important for the children to experience a physical connection with what they hear and do in mass to show them how our Catholic faith evolved," stated Ginny Modlin, faith formation coordinator for the parish.
A luncheon followed the ceremony using foods traditionally served for the occasion.
Families then participated in Stations of the Cross to reinforce the important events of Holy Week. "We look forward to making this an annual event for the children," said Modlin.

Holy Angels Church Adds Backdrop to Altar of Repose
Holy Angels Church in Dyersburg has added a colorful backdrop to the Altar of Repose in the Church. The backdrop was hand painted by parishioner Cathi Shea.
The symbolism of the pelican dates back to medieval Europe. People of that time considered the female pelican to be very attentive to her young. In time of famine, she would provide her own blood when no other food was available. The image on the new backdrop features "A Pelican in Her Piety" and depicts a female pelican on her nest, with wings half spread and chicks waiting at her feet with open beaks. She is plucking her breast or "vulning" (wounding) herself deliberately, shedding drops of blood and allowing them to fall into the mouths of the chicks.
Father William Saunders, pastor of Our Lady of Hope Parish in Potomac Falls and a professor of catechesis and theology at Notre Dame Graduate School in Alexandria, said of the image, "Given this tradition, one can easily see why the early Christians adapted it to symbolize our Lord, Jesus Christ. The pelican symbolizes Jesus our Redeemer who gave His life for our redemption and the atonement He made through His passion and death. We were dead to sin and have found new life through the Blood of Christ. Moreover, Jesus continues to feed us with His body and blood in the Holy Eucharist."
