K of C Dinner Series Features Seafood Boil

Fresh shrimp and crawfish were the main course at the most recent dinner at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Cordova. More than 350 pounds of fresh shrimp and live crawfish were brought in from New Orleans, cooked up and served to a hungry crowd in the church Parish Life Center. In addition to shrimp and crawfish, the dinner included corn-on-the-cob, new potatoes, and red beans and rice.

The dinner series is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, Timothy J. Coyle Council #9317. The Seafood Boil marked the end of the first year of the Dinner Series. Previous dinners include a Western Steak Night, Italian Night, a Wine Tasting, Lenten Fish Fry and Old Fashion Southern Cooking Supper.

"We hope to make the Seafood Boil an annual event," said Grand Knight Danny Doyle.

The Knights use the dinner events as fund raisers. Proceeds go to the various charitable organizations such as the Sister Ruth Ann Program at St. Benedict at Auburndale School, Madonna Day Circle, Special Olympics and other organizations.

The next series of dinners will start later this summer. More information will be available when the menus are set. Free babysitting service is provided, but advance registration is required. Call 901-756-1213 for more information.

Arts & Crafts Sale to Benefit Poor

The Ladies of Charity will host an Arts & Crafts Sale on Saturday, August 9 at Holy Rosary Church Gym from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. The event will also have a homemade bake sale and a concession stand operated by the Junior Ladies of Charity members. There are still some booths available. Each booth is a 10 x 10 space which includes two tables and electricity if needed. All proceeds from this event go to help the poor throughout Shelby County. Golf Tournament Planned

The Sixth Annual DeNeuville Learning Center Golf tournament will be held at North Creek Golf Course on September 5. Registration for the tournament will begin at noon with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Dinner and awards follow the tournament. All proceeds benefit DeNeuville Learning Center operated by Sisters of the Good Shepherd.

DeNeuville Learning Center is located at 190 South Cooper Street and provides a safe learning environment for women. The center provides educational opportunities for women in need. Classes offered include GED preparation, English as a Second Language, Computer and Software skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc), Job Search skills, just to name a few.

The annual tournament is one of two main fundraisers for DeNeuville Learning Center and support is critical to maintain the center's operation budget.

Annual Mass of Thanksgiving

All Health Care Professionals and those involved in Ministry to the Sick are invited to attend the Annual Mass of Thanksgiving on Saturday, August 16 at 10 a.m. at St. Louis Church, located at 203 S. White Station Rd. Bishop J. Terry Steib, S.V.D. will preside. There will also be a reception immediately following Mass.

2008 Catholic Men's Conference Planned

The fifth annual Catholic men's conference will be held at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Clarksdale, Mississippi on the weekend of August 29 _ 30 beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday and ending with Mass on Saturday at 5 p.m. This year's theme is Men of God-Called to Holiness. More than100 men from all over the south attended the weekend conference in 2007.

"As with past conferences, the greatest asset of the 2007 conference was the quality of speakers. I only wish that more men were there to witness their greatness and their devotion to the Catholic Church," said Fred Britt. " It's was great to see the number of priests that attended. The music ministry, food and hospitality from the ladies of the parish, adoration, confession, the Eucharist, excellent speakers made this conference the best one yet. "

Father Pio Mandato Fmhj will be one of the featured speakers for the 2008 program. He is a Capuchin Franciscan priest living as a missionary hermit in Eastern Pennsylvania. Father Pio has been involved in various apostolates from working with the homeless in New York, to giving retreats and celebrating healing Masses.

Bruce Brewer and Joe Polito, along with members of the Jubilee music ministry will be leading the praise and worship music this year. They minister regularly at Catholic conferences and retreats.

Retreats Offered in August in Alabama

The 13th annual Healing Grief Retreat will be held August 1-3 at the Benedictine Sisters Retreat Center of Sacred Heart Monastery in Cullman, Alabama.

The retreat will provide a spiritual framework for helping to heal the grief of those who have experienced the death of a loved one. The experience can also be beneficial for those who minister to the grieving.

Through prayer, reflection, conferences and small group interaction, participants can grow in their understanding of the grief process, and draw upon their spirituality as a means of healing.

The retreat will be led by the Rev. Carl Malm, grief minister and healthcare chaplain, and Margaret Anne Whitsett and Maggie Little of the grief ministry of First United Methodist Church in Huntsville.

A Reflection Day on St. Paul will be held at the Benedictine Sisters Retreat Center in Cullman on August 9. The Benedictine Sisters Retreat Center will host the event to honor the Year of Paul.

Sister Therese Haydel, O.S.B. will present "Custody of the Heart: Freedom and Slavery in the Writings of Paul," which will include some general information about Paul himself, his letters, and his use of imagery and metaphor in his writings. More specifically, she will focus on Paul's use of freedom and slavery language to articulate what it means to be "in Christ" and then will address some possible implications for Christian discipleship.

Celebration Planned for 40th Anniversary of Humanae vitae

The Diocese of Memphis NFP Center is planning a family celebration on Friday, July 25, with a special Mass at 6 p.m. followed by a pot luck dinner for the 40th anniversary of Pope Paul VIs encyclical, Humanae vitae.

The celebration will be at St. Paul Church, located at 1425 E. Shelby Dr.

Father Ben Bradshaw will be the celebrant for Mass and give the homily with special teaching about the encyclical.

This celebration is for everyone, Catholics, non-Catholics, married couples, singles, and especially families with children. This is a time to celebrate Gods plan for marriage and His gift of children.

Humanae vitae reiterated the Church's teaching that every life is sacred and that children are the supreme gift of marriage.

Plan to join the fun and family camaraderie with other families who appreciate the truth and freedom that was taught in Humanae vitae in 1968.
