Diocesan Hispanic Ministry Growing and Thriving

Half of the year is gone, yet it seems like yesterday when we were trying to make things happen for the Hispanic community in our diocese. We are happy to announce that our Hispanic Committee has accomplished the goals set for the first half of 2008.

We had the second retreat for the ministers of our parishes February 22-24. Last year we had the first at the Church of the Incarnation. Among the 175 participants we had altar servers, choir members, catechists, Eucharistic ministers, etc. They came from different parishes to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception to spend time with the Lord during the Lenten season. It was decided that the last weekend of the month of February, every year, it will be the pilgrimage for Hispanic ministers to come together to grow as such.

The topic guiding the retreat was: The Incarnation as a model for ministry - from being an active member in the parish to become an agent of evangelization in his/her process of conversion.

In April 25-27 we celebrated the First Diocesan Retreat for married couples at Our Lady of Sorrows church. The couples came together to explore the sacrament they had celebrated years ago. As mature Christian adults now they were trying to give God an answer to the invitation of living more wholeheartedly.

It is true that there have been retreats for families and couples in some parishes, but this was the first done at diocesan level. Out of this experience, we saw the need to organize a retreat to promote the Sacrament among couples married only civilly or living together.

In the Hispanic community, families face a big challenge: addictions. Alcohol, drugs, pornography, shopping, etc. are among the addictions our families deal with. May 1^st through the 4^th Prevention and Rescue had the annual retreat for women dealing with codependency. The participants deal with their relatives, husbands or even children who are addicts and so they came to find strength in the Lord at Our Lady Queen of Peace Retreat Center. The women who participated in the retreat have formed a support group that meets every Friday in Sacred Heart Church for spiritual formation and support from other women following a 12-step program. They have also decided to form a reading club and they read a book every month which they use as inspiration for their weekly sharing.

We have also have been working side by side with the Department of Catechesis, Family Ministries, the Institute for Liturgy and Spirituality and Campus Ministry for Jovenes -Young Adults.

We are glad in the Lord that we have come this far in the organization of Hispanic Ministry for the Diocese.

There is a lot more to do in the second half of 2008, but for now we are thankful that we were given the grace to celebrate our faith through so many wonderful events.

Ministerio Diocesano Hispano

A través del primer semestre del año; el Ministerio Católico Hispano ha ofrecido eventos para la comunidad Hispana en Memphis. Estos eventos han sido una vía para conocer más nuestra fe, al mismo tiempo han brindado la oportunidad para que la comunidad se familiarize con otras parroquias de la Diócesis.

Durante el último fin de semana de Febrero se realizó el Segundo Retiro para Ministros Litúrgicos de las parroquias.

El retiro tuvo lugar en la Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción. Aquí llegaron a reunirse 175 ministros entre ellos acólitos, lectores, ministros de la comunión, coro, ujieres y más. El tema del retiro fue "La Encarnación". Un ejemplo para aplicar en nuestra vida de ministerio. Esta fué una ocasión donde los ministros tomaron la oportunidad para conocer y compartir su fe católica no solo a nivel parroquial si no a nivel diocesano.

El primer Retiro Diocesano de Parejas casadas por la Iglesia tuvo lugar del 25 al 27 de Abril en la iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores. En este retiro las parejas reconocieron que son personas comprometidas en el sacramento del matrimonio y por consiguiente con Dios. Tomando esto como base para ser ejemplo a sus hijos y a su comunidad. Con esta experiencia se ha visto la necesidad de llevar acabo un retiro para parejas casadas por el civil o que solo están viviendo juntos.

El Ministerio de Prevención y Rescate también realizó el Retiro Anual para Mujeres. Este ministerio conocido por trabajar con personas que tienen problemas de adicción, no solo alcohól o drogas. (Una adicción puede ser ver televisión, ir de compras, comer, codependencia, etc.), invitó a las participantes al Centro de Retiros Diocesano, Nuestra Señora Reina de la Paz, donde se ofreció un ambiente de aprendizaje y tranquilidad. Aquí compartieron sus retos en la vida diaria como esposas, madres, empleadas, etc. Apartir del retiro sea formado un grupo de apoyo y lectura para continuar el aprendizaje que se inició en el retiro, cada mes se leé un libro que ayuda al desarrollo espiritual y personal de las mujeres.

Para el cierre de este semestre, el Ministerio Hispano en colaboración con la Oficina de Catequesis ofreció un curso en Español "La Vida Humana en Nuestra Fe Católica. Otra oportunidad para la comunidad de aprender y desenvolverse en la fe en su propio idioma. Con el Ministerio Familiar se ofrecieron las clases pre-matrimoniales. También se trabaja con el Instituto de Liturgia y Espiritualidad, el Ministerio de Jovenes y otros.

Ha sido un buen inicio de año del Señor, y damos gracias a El por estos eventos que se han realizado. Sabemos que aun hay mucho por hacer. Con la gracia del Señor, continuarémos esta misión que El nos ha confiado para que "El Verbo sea hecho carne entre nosotros".
