St. Paul Picnic Fun for All
On June 29, as the Jubilee Year of St. Paul began, the parishioners of St. Paul Church celebrated the first of many gatherings planned to commemorate the year dedicated to their patron.
The first event was a Parish Picnic and was attended by more than 600 parishioners, former parishioners and St. Paul School Alumni. Old friends and new enjoyed the many outdoor games and events.
The festivities also included a Cake and Pie Baking Contest. Thirty-one entries were submitted. Judges were four of the diocesan Seminarians, Yoelvis Gonzalez, Patrick Gallagher, Kevin Stockbridge and Deacon Robbie Favazza. With chef hats in place, they tasted and scored every single one.
Joining St. Paul pastor, Father Mike Werkhoven and associate pastor, Father Ben Bradshaw were Seminarians Adam Rust, Johnnie B. Smith, Enrique Granados, newly ordained Father Dennis Schenkel and Vocations Director, Father Keith Stewart.
St. Paul is planning more events to commemorate the Jubilee Year of St. Paul. Call 901-346-2380 for more information.
St. Philip Church Honors Deacon Bill Davis
St. Philip the Apostle Church recently recognized Deacon Bill Davis for his service as Pastoral Administrator for the past seven years. He was honored with a potluck dinner and the accolades of more than 200 parishioners on Sunday, July 13 following Mass.
Deacon Mike Blome presented Deacon Bill with a plaque honoring him for his dedication to St. Philip Church and thanked him for his accomplishments in liturgy, facility and social aspects of the St. Philip ministries. The parish has grown from 80 to 250 families during Deacon Bill's leadership.
While Deacon Bill's was at St. Philip Church, the parish established a weekly liturgy service, Stations of the Cross, Benediction and Exposition. The Church experienced the expansion of the fellowship hall and narthex, parking lot upgrades, complete renovation of the sanctuary including new pews, carpeting, and altar upgrade. The parish also added a prayer garden adjacent to the narthex. The church also formed a Men's Club, a Knights of Columbus Council, a Senior Group, and a Youth Group. During his tenure, the parish also began hosting a Lenten Fish Fry.
St. Philip the Apostle parish now moves into a new phase in its history and is looking forward to the spiritual leadership of the newly assigned pastor, Father Stephen Kenny.
