DOWNTOWN CHURCH, BUILDINGS RAVAGED BY FIRE - - On October 6, fire swept through The First United Methodist Church, built in 1893, collapsing its steeple and flicking off embers (such as those in photo) that ignited three other buildings. Arson was not the cause, a fire official said. The buildings were unoccupied, and no injuries were immediately reported. Nearby St. Peter Church and St. Mary Church, both part of the Diocese of Memphis, were unaffected by the fires.
