Bishop J. Terry Steib, S.V.D. recently made a visit to the continent of Africa along with Bishop John Ricard from the Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahasee and Bishop Robert Brucato from the Archdiocese of New York, as part of the U.S. Bishops' Delegation for the visit to the countries of Senegal, Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, and Kenya. Bishop Ricard serves as chairman of the Committee on International Policy in the bishops' conference. Bishop Brucato serves as chairman of the Committee on Migration, and Bishop Steib serves as a board member for Catholic Relief Services.

The group met with the Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) in Dakar, Senegal as an expression of solidarity with the United States bishops. The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is a country where over 3 million people have died as a result of war and where the Church is suffering greatly. In Burundi, the bishops visited Bujumbura to support the peace-building and reconciliation efforts of the Church. In all the countries, the three bishops visited the works and ministries of Catholic Relief Services (CRS) an organization which the Diocese of Memphis continues to support so generously.

Sharon Doty, a consultant from Tulsa, Oklahoma who conducts these training sessions across the country, led two two-day sessions for pastors, principals, volunteers and directors in training at the Catholic Center. The diocese is in the process of implementing the VIRTUS program, "Protecting God's Children." This program is designed to train priests, deacons, educators, church personnel, some parents, volunteers and others regularly involved with minors regarding the issue of child abuse, including sexual abuse. These safe environment programs and training are being incorporated into the on-going mission of the diocese, using modern web-based software in order to be current and compliant at all times.

Facilitator training sessions were held in the Diocese of Memphis in October, according to Sandra Goldstein, director of Human Resources for the diocese and program administrator of the VIRTUS program.
